This is the first unified history of the large, prestigious dictionaries of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, compiled in academies, which set out to glorify living European languages. The tradition began with the Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca (1612) in Florence and the Dictionnaire de l'Académie françoise (1694) in Paris, and spread across Europe - to Germany, Spain, England, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Russia - in the eighteenth century, engaging students of language as diverse as Leibniz, Samuel Johnson, and Catherine the Great. All the major academy and academy-style dictionaries of the period up to 1800, published and unpublished, are discussed in a single narrative, bridging national and linguistic boundaries, to offer a history of lexicography on a European scale. Like John Considine's Dictionaries in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2008), this study treats dictionaries both as physical books and as ambitious works of the human imagination.

Academies, societies and other learned fraternities were not only the decisive agencies in the accumulation of knowledge in the early Modern Age, they also committed themselves to a broad range of culture-political aims that frequently shaded off into direct political action taking highly efficient advantage of the latitude available to what were usually rather loosely organised groupings. Making membership conditional solely upon expertise in a particular field and allegiance to interconfessional moral authority, the academies were highly instrumental in furthering the modernisation process in the early Modern Age. With their symbolic forms of interaction they rehearsed quasi-democratic models which stand in direct lineage to the programmatic demands and political upheavals triggering the rise of the bourgeoisie in the late 18th century. The volume consists largely of papers held at an international congress organised in Paris in 1989 under the patronage of Jacques Chirac and forming part of the two-hundred-year celebrations commemorating the French Revolution. They are supplemented by additional studies designed to consolidate the volume's aspiration to the status of a manual of the European academic society movement, albeit without claiming completeness in the discussion of all the relevant institutions. Copious references, a comprehensive bibliographic survey and a detailed index help to make this an invaluable source of information on a paramount agency of scholarly socialisation of major interest for all disciplines taking a historical view on cultural studies.

"A manifesto for the humanities in the digital age, A New Republic of Letters argues that the history of texts, together with the methods by which they are preserved and made available for interpretation, are the overriding subjects of humanist study in the twenty-first century. Theory and philosophy, which have grounded the humanities for decades, no longer suffice as an intellectual framework. Jerome McGann proposes we look instead to philology-a discipline which has been out of fashion for many decades but which models the concerns of digital humanities with surprising fidelity. For centuries, books have been the best way to preserve and transmit knowledge. But as libraries and museums digitize their archives and readers abandon paperbacks for tablet computers, digital media are replacing books as the repository of cultural memory. While both the mission of the humanities and its traditional modes of scholarship and critical study are the same, the digital environment is driving disciplines to work with new tools that require major, and often very difficult, institutional changes. Now more than ever, scholars need to recover the theory and method of philological investigation if the humanities are to meet their perennial commitments. Textual and editorial scholarship, often marginalized as a narrowly technical domain, should be made a priority of humanists attention."--Publisher's description.

With this first of eight volumes, the eminent economist Fritz Machlup launches his monumental inquiry into the production of knowledge as an economic activity. Volume I presents the conceptual framework for this inquiry and falls into three parts: Types of Knowledge, Qualities of Knowledge, and Knowledge as a Product.Originally published in 1981.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
